Southwest Roadtrip

When I was a junior in high school, my parents decided our summer vacation would be a road trip tour of the Southwest United States. I was… skeptical. A week driving from one National Park to the next in the middle of summer with my parents and my 10 year old sister was not necessarily what came to mind as a fun time for me when I was 16. But we flew out to Las Vegas, rented a car, and we were on our way to the Grand Canyon. And wow. Just wow. As anyone knows who has been there, it is so much more than you could ever imagine from pictures. From there we went on to visit Bryce Canyon, Hoover Dam, Petrified Forest, and Zion to name a few of our stops. And I had an amazing time. To this day, this trip ranks in one of my top 5 favorite trips I’ve ever taken. And when I think about it, public lands have been a part of so many happy memories in my life. The appreciation I gained for the environment during this trip will last me a lifetime and I am grateful for the opportunity I have now at NEEF to help children and their families across the country experience similar moments of awe, wonder, and joy from our natural world.
